We’ll book an excellent pre-tour hotel in downtown Hanoi; we’ll meet you at the airport; we’ll transport you, your companions and your luggage to your hotel in a comfortable, air conditioned car or bus; and we’ll help with check in to ensure you get the best possible rooms. We know and partner with first-rate boutique 3+ to 5 star hotels -- great value in terrific downtown locations right in the Old Quarter, or next to Hoan Kiem Lake (or even in Tay Ho if you prefer; contact us for this).

As needed, we can also help arrange secure storage for any luggage you would prefer to leave with the hotel rather than carrying on tour with us. We'll also arrange late check out or half day rooms (where possible) if tour departure timing means you would otherwise not have a room to freshen up, rest or repack in. We'll tell you the best local cafes and neighborhood restaurants, and some of the most interesting nearby spots to explore.

If you already have a good quality motorcycle helmet (and other protective gear such as gloves and elbow & knee protectors) that fits you well, and it’s possible for you to bring it with you, then we recommend you do so -- it can be difficult, depending on your size, to find a good helmet in Vietnam.

However, if bringing your own from home is too difficult for whatever reason, then for a small daily cost we can provide a helmet, gloves and elbow & knee protectors. We have limited quantities and sizes, so please let us know well in advance.

We offer the option of riding pillion behind one of our experienced Vietnamese riders for those who feel more comfortable this way. It can be a great way to go - the advantages of traveling by motorbike, and being a part of the overall motorbike tour, but without the burden of needing to drive and navigate the difficulties of Vietnamese roads and traffic yourself, or the hassle of getting a license that is valid in Vietnam.

Our drivers are safe, know the roads and will make you feel at ease even if you have never ridden pillion on a motorbike before. Going pillion is not hugely expensive, but it's not cheap either, and if there are two or more people in a group considering pillion, then the extra cost for pillion is not too different to the extra cost of hiring a car and driver -- something to think about.

In addition to the limousine bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang, for a modest additional cost we also offer a private car + driver (SUV or similar, for 3 or 4 passengers, including guide). The journey by car takes about 6 hours and can leave any time. While the limousine bus is very comfortable, the car is a bit more comfortable still, and offers greater flexibility in terms of departure times and ability to stop wherever you want along the way -- including at a better cafe than the bus!

Adding a support vehicle to your motorbike tour can be a great idea.

It means someone who does not want to ride a motorbike (a partner, a child) can accompany the tour, or several riders can share a bike, riding alternative sections. It also means that some luggage can be offloaded from the motorbike panniers and carried in the car, making for lighter, more comfortable riding. More extensive motorbike tools and spare parts can also be carried. In addition, in the unlikely event of an injury, a support car is likely to be faster than waiting for a local ambulance, especially in remote areas.

We do not include a support car & driver as a default in our motorbike tours because not every group wants it. Of course, we always travel with an extensive medical kit and phones for use in emergencies and for many groups this is sufficient. However, for other groups the extra flexibility, comfort and peace of mind is worth the extra cost. If you need more info, then of course contact us!

For greater flexibility and a faster journey, we offer a private car (or minibus) instead of the scheduled bus back to Hanoi from Lao Cai. On the day we return to Hanoi, we ride our motorbikes from Sapa to Lao Cai, just as we would if we were catching the scheduled bus. The private car (or minibus) will meet us in Lao Cai. Going by private car (or minibus) gives us the flexibility to choose our departure time from Lao Cai (and thus when we need to leave Sapa); we can also choose where & when we stop on the journey back to Hanoi, avoid the crowds and have shorter stops if we want to make the overall journey faster.

When we get to Hanoi we can take you directly to your hotel, without having to unload at the bus terminal and reload into taxis or cars. If you have booked a post-tour hotel with us, then we will also assist with check-in and make sure everything goes smoothly.

The overnight train between Lao Cai (the railway station for the hill town of Sapa, and a bit less than an hour's drive from Sapa) and Hanoi is a fascinating alternative to traveling by bus or car. The train journey is a step-back-in-time experience - a glimpse into a colonial wood-paneled world that is all but gone. The trains may be slow and rattle a bit, but they evoke history in the way a modern bus or car cannot. A lot of people love it as a one-time experience – especially if they bring earplugs to help ensure a good sleep!

Our default for returning to Hanoi from Sapa for our motorbike tours is a comfortable, air-conditioned bus, leaving Lao Cai in the late afternoon and getting to Hanoi late in the evening -- the exact time depending on traffic. For our tours by private car + driver, the default is to simply continue with the car and arrive in Hanoi typically in the early evening. As an alternative in both cases, we offer three types of cabins on the two best train services, the top of the line Victoria Express and the very good Fanxipan Express (or Sapaly Express or Chapa Express, which are the same standard): a deluxe private 2 person cabin; a premium 4 person cabin reserved just for 2 people; and a premium 4 person cabin reserved for 4 people. All of these cabins are very comfortable. Trains leave Lao Cai around 8 – 9pm in the evening and arrive in Hanoi around 5 – 6 am.

Whatever your cabin selection, we will escort you and your luggage onto the train, pick you up you at the other end, and ensure that everything goes smoothly. After arrival in Hanoi, we will transfer you to your hotel where you can drop your luggage. If you have booked a post-tour hotel with us, then we will also assist with check-in and breakfast where applicable. Finally, we note that some people commence their post-tour Hanoi hotel booking on the same night as the overnight train trip – so they can go straight to their hotel room after arriving in Hanoi in the early morning.
